Smart Pup for Amber

Smart Pup for Amber

My Diabetes Friend Hi my name is Amber. I’m 10 years old. I’ve been wanting an assistance dog for a year and have done a lot of research about how they can help children with type 1 diabetes and social challenges. I have 2 needles in my body almost all the time.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was four. My pancreas stopped making insulin for an unknown reason, so I have to have insulin needles to stay alive. Since then I have had at least 1,414 syringes, 52 sensor needles, 520 cannula needles, and 10,960 finger pricks. That totals at least 12,946. My body has scars from all the needles. I also have a neurodevelopmental disorder that provides me with social challenges. I’m hoping my Smart Pup can help alert me and my parents when my diabetes pump fails, or when my continuous glucose monitor fails or is inaccurate, and can help comfort me with my disabilities. Mum hopes my Smart Pup will help me when I’m a teenager as diabetes is always harder to manage through the teen years. I love animals and find they make me feel more happy.

This organisation is a non for-profit organisation and we feel well and truly honoured to have been chosen. The training for the pup can take 12-18 months but it is intense, and these dogs are just incredible.

Amber, I know you’ve been researching and asking for an assistance dog for at least a year. Here’s a little something to help make your dream a reality.
