Smart Pup for Danny (202405)

Danny, a 12-year-old boy with Autism, has a deep interest in drawing, LEGO, Star Wars, and creating fantasy tales. He delights in gardening and constructing a make-believe world for his imaginary creatures.Danny has a deep affection for animals of every kind. He delights in visiting his grandparents’ hobby farm to play with the chickens and cows. Contributing to their wildlife care, he feeds the baby kangaroos their bottles, then sets them free to play or tucks them into their pouches for a nap.

Danny is a polite, quiet, and reserved child who struggles with visiting shops, restaurants, or parks when other families are present. Social gatherings like classmates’ birthdays, friends’ parties, and playdates are too anxiety-inducing for him to join. Unfortunately, his anxiety in public places makes social interactions difficult.

This anxiety has escalated to the extent that attending school has become a challenge, and he can currently only manage two hours a day.

Danny, the youngest of six siblings, five of whom have special needs, is a delightful child adored by those who take the time to get to know him. His creativity shines through various aspects of his life, from weaving fantasy tales to illustrating artwork with boundless imagination. He has even established a garden to accommodate characters from his beloved stories. His enthusiasm for his Lego’s set is unmistakable. He constructs castle knights, aliens, soldiers, skeletons and other mini-figures from spare parts that he amasses from hand me downs, the Coles little mini-figures collector sets and from online purchases or thrift stores that siblings have scouted out for him. Danny envisions forming armies of castle knights, Star Wars characters, aliens, and skeletons, deriving pleasure from assembling sets and using his creativity to portray scenes from his stories.

Danny’s severe anxiety and autism lead to him to encounter difficulties in public settings. He feels anxious in places like stores, cafes, food courts, church, or even parks when surrounded by others, leading to a the whole family needing to make swift departures. Participating in social gatherings, such as classmates’ birthday parties and get-togethers or family events, often triggers panic attacks, prompting him and the whole family needing to leave. His anxiety significantly impacts his daily routine, resulting in challenges with school attendance. Currently, he follows a modified schedule, attending school for only two hours a day due to his struggles. When overwhelmed, he resorts to hitting his head with his hands and faces elopement issues at school and home.
