05 Feb Smart Pup for Kal
Hello, my name is Kal. I am 5 years old. When I turned 3, I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder and a speech delay. Everyday things can be difficult for me.
My Mummy can’t take me places that other kids my age go. I can’t go to the shopping centre, to the cinema, or to a restaurant with my family. I wish I could go to see the crocodiles at Australia Zoo and see the sharks at Sea World. I would love to go to Movie World because I know that is where the Super Heroes live! But these places are too busy and noisy for me. I get overwhelmed and try to run away, or my sensory overload causes me to meltdown, sometimes I get hurt. This makes it too distressing and dangerous for me to go.
I wear my sound protection earmuffs which helps a lot when we need to mow the lawn or make a smoothie, I love smoothies!
I try really hard to make friends, but other kids my age talk to me and I find it hard to communicate. I get embarrassed because I don’t understand them, so I play on my own.
I love trains, cars and animals, especially dogs! I’d love to have my very own Smart Pup. I hope that one day my Smart Pup could help me do these fun things that other kids do.
This organisation is a non for-profit organisation and we feel well and truly honoured to have been chosen. The training for the pup can take 12-18 months but it is intense, and these dogs are just incredible.
