09 Aug Lara’s Smart Pup
Despite medical and allied health support, anxiety has robbed Lara of the ability to live a normal life. She struggles to leave the house and if she does leave the house, she finds it difficult to travel too far from home. Crowded places or social situations with unfamiliar people are unbearable, which restricts her life incredibly. These issues combined with OCD means that Lara’s life is very limited and she is unable to engage in a life, typical of a girl her age. This includes attending a mainstream school, attending social engagements, engaging in sport or making new friends. As you can imagine, the impact on her mental health is enormous and makes us fear for her safety.
An assistance dog would help Lara’s anxiety and would alert her to changes in her well-being, which would help her to improve her safety. Lara may be able to go out in public more easily with an assistance dog and may be able to do it without her mother being present. This increase in her independence and confidence would be life changing for her and for our family.
