10 Jan Smart Pup for Macie
Macie is a 17 month old amazing little girl who always has a smile on her face despite a host of medical issues. She lives in Mackay QLD with her mum and 3 siblings. After a complication free pregnancy, Macie was born at full term and was undiagnosed breech, unfortunately medical intervention was not possible resulting in Macie having a difficult birth with an extended period of time without oxygen. This led to complications with her health, she started having seizures within her first hour of life and has officially been diagnosed with epilepsy and Hypoxia related brain damage.
Macie has been unable to swallow or suck since birth and has relied on a feeding tube to sustain her life. She was recently given a mickey button PEG, a permanent form of feeding tube surgically placed into her stomach.
From the very beginning Macie has showed sheer determination to exceed all medical expectations, it was presumed she would be unable to roll, crawl or walk and was intially diagnosed with Level 4 Cerebral Palsy. Macie has slowly made progress in these areas although delayed for her age and her diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy has been downgraded to level 2.
Macie also has horners syndrome which affects her eyes and could possibly cause vision issues in the future and she has recently started to lose some of her hearing and is unclear how this will impact her future.
Macie has spent a large part of her short life either in hospital or attending therapy, drs and specialist appointments, some of which require her to travel to other parts of the state. It is due to her lack of immune system that results in her constantly picking up various ilnesses and virus’s and only recently had a quite severe viral infection causing her to be flown by royal flying doctors service to Townsville ICU.
A seizure response assistance dog we feel would have a tremendous impact on Macie’s day to day life allowing her family peace of mind knowing her seizures which are unpredictable could be detected. As well as offering Macie companionship and emotional support for whatever her future holds for her.
All donations over $2 are tax deductible. Thank you for your suppawt.

Posted at 17:00h, 31 JanuaryThe Atherton family are a beautiful family and they have had their share of sadness – I could not think of anything more beautiful for Macie then to have a canine companion to watch over her.
