18 May Smart Pup for Benjamin (211218)
Benjamin is a bright and happy 3-year-old boy with Autism (level 3), Global Development Delays, ADHD, Dysphagia, and Sensory Processing Disorder. Benjamin lives with his mum, dad, two sisters and has another sibling due in November.
Benjamin is non-verbal, has no ability or understanding to follow basic instruction, and has no understanding of danger, making life for Benjamin and the whole family, very isolated as this prevents us from going anywhere in the community, even to a simple park. These communication struggles result in so much frustration for Benjamin. Furthermore, Benjamin struggles with a range of things that a neurotypical person does not think twice about, including transitions from one task to another, social skills, feeding/eating, focus, attention, memory, emotional understanding, and regulation.
Benjamin has always been a climber – no lock is too difficult for him, and he loves to run and explore. One of the big difficulties for Benjamin is, he has no understanding of danger including roads, cars, train lines. Benjamin cannot yet swim and is fixated on water, thereby posing additional risks in the community. Benjamin will simply run onto a road, or into a dangerous environment with no care in the world.
An Autism Assistance Dog has been recommended by Benjamin’s therapists to keep him safe, calm, and regulated. This will allow Benjamin to participate in the community in a safe manner, feel safer and be calmer during the day and night. The Smart Pup will also reduce the isolation felt by the family as a whole.
The bond that children with autism have with a Smart Pup allows them to cope with everyday activities and cope with life due to feeling safer, calmer, and through a reduction in sensory overload with minimised meltdowns. When a child is regulated, it also provides them far greater opportunities to develop their communication and to feel heard.
A Smart Pup presents so many opportunities and supports for Benjamin, including safety, communication, social relationships, and inclusion, reduction in anxiety with increased emotional understanding, increased regulation, and confidence and independence. The Smart Pup would be with Benjamin all day and night to support him in all areas of general life. Additionally, our whole family would benefit due to the reduction in stress in the household as well as reducing the isolation currently faced. Every donation adds up to make a big difference!
