27 Feb Smart Pup for Elijah (262213)
Our cheeky little Elijah is fundraising for his very own Smart pup! Elijah was born with a rare genetic condition, 1p36 deletion syndrome. As a result he also has Autism, Left hemi cerebral palsy, polymicrogyria, epilepsy and a dilated Aorta. Life can be overwhelming for Elijah and he often struggles with tasks we might find simple like a trip to the local shopping centre.
Elijah is very easily overwhelmed and will often run away in busy situations which makes it extremely difficult going out as a family. He has a very busy life involving multiple specialist appointments and regular therapy sessions which can be hard on a young boy. A specially trained assistance dog would be able to accompany Elijah to all of his appointments and provide assistance in a multitude of ways.
Elijah’s smart pup will also receive training to detect his seizures. At present there is no equipment on the market to detect his seizures as they are very subtle however last anywhere from 40 minutes to 3 hours with medical intervention and hospitalisation. At night I regularly check on him multiple times to ensure that he is not having a seizure. This leaves me often in a very sleep deprived state which makes caring for Elijah even more difficult.
To train such an AMAZING dog it will take 12 months! They are very expensive and unfortunately not covered by any government or NDIS plans. We are fundraising to cover some of this cost.
