27 Jan Smart Pup for Lucas (25215)
I’d like to introduce you to Lucas, my 5 year old son, my invisible gift. Lucas is a true miracle. One I longed for, for many, many years.
Lucas has also been diagnosed with ADHD, global development delay, anxiety, depression and has a high likelihood of being diagnosed with autism. Most of his short life has been filled with seeing every type of therapist you can think of, and taking medication on a daily basis, just to calm his mind. There’s not much time left for fun activities. He has come a long way since he was diagnosed at 3 years old. The first time he met his paediatrician he was almost immediately prescribed medication and was diagnosed without seeing the specialist. One of the doctors making the diagnosis was exhausted after only an hour of testing him. The other doctor present mentioned how it was the second time, in her entire career, that she had to sit in front of the door to prevent a child from escaping.
Yet this was an absolutely normal event for Lucas.
Lucas has an incredibly hard time staying still. When eating a meal, he will get up no less than 30 times, he is physically unable to sit and focus on a task. He would lick toilet seats and literally jump off the walls. He would also self harm, which was heartbreaking for both of us.
He has such a unique connection to animals. He absolutely loves dogs, and is a completely different child around them. He slows down, takes care and is able to focus on interacting with the dog. He continuously asks for a dog. During speech therapy when practising sentences involving a dog, he would correct the therapist by saying “no my assist dog”.
A dog would accept him for who he is. The dog would never judge, blame or accuse. Lucas would finally have that friend that would always be there. The dog would help calm him, keep him safe, and build an unbreakable bond.
I cannot begin to explain in how many ways an assist dog would benefit my son, our family, both him and I. I want to give my son this gift that would make him the happiest boy, and also provide the stability he needs to calm down and focus. A gift that will calm our home and our future.
I can’t do this alone so I’m asking for help to make this dream a reality.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping to add a new member to our little family.
