During his birth, Sammy almost died due to oxygen deprivation – still, he fought through and continues to fight each and every day. At age 3 Sammy was diagnosed with non-verbal level 3 autism, severe speech apraxia, sensory processing disorder and social anxiety. Despite these challenges, he has grown into a strong, sweet natured little boy who brings so much joy to others.
We are fundraising for a Smart Pup because animals (particularly dogs) help Sammy centre himself, feel safe and happy. Sammy is now becoming aware of that he is different from his peers and he struggles to connect and make friends. As his parents, it breaks our hearts watching him try to approach others and then be rejected because of his unusual mannerisms and behaviours. These interactions negatively affect his confidence, anxiety levels, sleep, eating, and overall general wellbeing. We believe a smart pup will not only aid Sammy with his daily tasks, but it will also provide him with a friend – a sense of companionship he so longs for and deserves.
Our dream for Sammy is for him to reach his full potential, to be healthy, happy and live an independent life. He has so much to give this world and we just want to help give him the opportunity to build healthy, lasting friendships, use his talents to reach for the stars, feel safe and secure in his environment and feel like a valuable member of his community. Above all, we want him to know how very loved he is and that he is worthy of all the love in the world.
Having an assistance dog would be life changing for Sammy. Giving him such a gift would allow him to thrive by offering him the best quality of life.
