09 Mar Smart Pup for Xavier (55214)
Hi! My name is Xavier and I am 7 years old. I have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, depression and severe anxiety.
My disabilities affect every part of my life, and I find it so hard to cope with so many things. My anxiety is what affects me the most in life – it is extreme. I worry about everything! I worry about getting things wrong or making mistakes. I worry about my family, my teachers or my peers not caring about me. I worry about things changing unexpectedly and not knowing what to do and what is expected of me. I worry about getting out in games and being treated unfairly. I worry ALL the time. It is really hard for me to leave my home and do activities that other kids my age enjoy. I am unable to participate in anything without constant support from my parents or a 1:1 assistant. And even then, I am so anxious that I usually have many meltdowns and often don’t enjoy myself. Activities like going to friends’ birthday parties, going to the zoo, going to Nippers or doing Auskick are often impossible for me. School is so hard for me too – I have many times where I just cannot cope, and times where I haven’t been able to attend. All of this makes my life really hard. So hard that sometimes I have told my parents that I don’t want to live anymore. But really, I just want to be happy, and be like everybody else!
I love animals. Animals are really calming for me and I feel safe in their company. I love all animals – worms and bugs, reptiles, birds, sea creatures, dogs, cats and horses. I am really excited about having an assistance dog. Having a dog will help me to be more confident, to be able to calm down more quickly when I’m anxious or upset, and help me to access the community more often and to be safe. It will help me to join in activities that other kids my age do – and help me to enjoy them and enjoy my life.
