It costs over 35,000 and takes 14 months to complete the training required for one accredited Assistance Dog. As it stands, the demand is highly outweighing our capacity to meet the needs of all those seeking our help. With our waiting lists at full capacity, our clients currently wait up to two years to receive a SmartPup. It is our goal to reduce the waiting time to 6 months.

Smart Pups Centre

It’s no walk in the park teaching puppies to become Smart Pups Assistance Dogs . It requires boundless energy, care and experience; not to mention a lot of space!

That’s where the Smart Pups Centre comes in. The centre is located on the Sunshine Coast Qld. The Centre’s design has drawn on international expertise; Giving us a world-class facility, which includes:

Airconditioned kennel block filled with the latest creature comforts

Huge state of the art indoor training facility, fully air conditioned

Recreation areas where dogs can run free and socialise

An Administration building

A grooming room to pamper our Smart Pups

A caretakers residence

Room to grow and have our own veterinary clinic and state-of-the-art breeding facility

The kennel blocks

Our kennel blocks are filled with the latest creature comforts. Every dog will have his or her own private kennel.

The floors of each kennel block are coated with a non-porous epoxy resin. Combined with the reverse-cycle air conditioning system, this ensures that any unpleasant smells don’t hang around for very long. The floors will also gently sloped, so any toilet mishaps will flow straight into the drainage system, to make cleaning a lot easier.

The services building

The food-preparation area in the kennel block will be fully equipped to feed hungry dogs. It will come complete with a deep freezer, refrigerator, microwave oven, stainless-steel food bins, work tops and wash-up areas

The shower and grooming areas will be bustling with activity. With dogs to be groomed every morning in kennel block, our kennel attendants will certainly have their hands full!

The services building will also house our comprehensive veterinary facilities. These will include an operating theatre, radiology room with a state-of-the-art digital x-ray machine, recovery area and a reproduction room to allow transfer of
genetic material from across the globe.

It will also contain a laundry for washing the many towels and blankets used every day at the Smart Pups Centre.

Recreation areas

The Centre includes many outdoor fenced areas where the dogs can run off leash, supervised by our kennel attendants. All areas will be equipped with drinking water, and will have shade cloths to protect the dogs in the summer sun.

There will be external runs, where the dogs spend most of the day when they’re not working.

When the dogs feel especially energetic, they can visit a range of large grassed areas for free running and exercise. There will also be socialising areas, where the recruits can meet and play with other trainee Smart Pups.

Our breeding centre

The Breeding Centre will truly be at the heart of our organisation because it’s where every Smart Pup puppy meets the world. Every wagging tail and wet nose brings an opportunity for someone with specials needs to live a full and active life.

The journey of every Smart Pups starts here, where the pups begin their early development from the time they are born. They will live in the nursery until they are about eight weeks old and during this time are exposed to different objects, sounds, lights and textures that they might encounter in the real world.

Every pup will be born with the essential characteristics it needs to eventually become a great Smart Pup, thanks to the high standard of our specially selected Breeding Dogs.

The garden

The training track

The dogs’ training track will wind its way through the grounds of the Smart Pups Centre, stretching for a total of 1.4 kilometers.

While most Smart Pups training occurs in real-life situations, our training track is the first step for new puppies. It’s also ideal to reinforce the dogs’ training in specific areas or to improve their concentration if necessary.

The track will be designed to simulate scenarios that the trainees might later encounter as Smart Pups. It includes: Seven different ground surfaces: concrete, mulch, gravel, sandstone, bitumen, decomposed granite and washed aggregate.

Bridges, traffic barriers, manholes, textured grids and temporary construction paths, so the dogs learn to guide people safely around obstacles of different shapes and sizes.

Landmarks such as telephone kiosks, bus stops, traffic lights and crossings.

The vet clinic

The new vet clinic will enable Smart Pups to provide all healthcare to our dogs on site, which will reduce health risks and cut external veterinary expenses by more than half.

These savings will make it possible to train an additional 24 dogs over the next five years, giving more children with special needs the chance to be matched with a life-changing Smart Pup.
